Besides the normal Saturday morning sessions, Northern turners either hosts or participates in a number of other club events throughout the year. (Unfortunately, normality has been disrupted by the Covid pandemic which is still affecting some of the events listed below)
Exhibitions
Major exhibitions are held at the Royal Adelaide Showgrounds in cooperation with relevant events hosted by Kim Jones exhibitions. Exhibitions are held over three days in April. July and October and all items are for sale at reasonable prices. Continuous demonstrations of woodturning are given there. These are excellent opportunities to see what the club is about and to discuss any aspect of woodturning with the demonstrators or gallery supervisors.
In addition, the club exhibits at the Tea Tree Gully Library during the SALA Festival in August.
A major exhibition is held at The Atrium, Burnside Civic Centre, Greenhill Road Burnside, running from the beginning of December to the end of January each year. For information about these and other Northern Turners exhibitions can be found on the News & Events section of the website, or you can sign up to receive email advice.
Public Demonstrations
Occasional demonstrations are given at the Modbury Bunnings Warehouse on a Saturday morning or at other fairs or locations.
Upcoming demonstrations are usually announced on the website News section or you can sign up to receive email advice.
MMoM: The Merry Month of May was begun in 1997 when Northern Turners organised a visit to the Mildura Woodturners, with a return visit to Adelaide the following year. Since then it has expanded to include the then twelve other Woodgroup SA clubs on a rotating basis. It is a weekend of woodturning and related activities, with social functions and interest trips arranged for partners
Turn SA Turn SA began in 2014 to replace the SATURN event that was begun by NT in 1999, a weekend camp for serious woodturning business. Turn SA is normally held at Lucindale in August
Weekend Demonstration Workshop: Each November, since 2004, Northern Turners has invited an internationally recognised woodturner to Adelaide to demonstrate his/her latest skills. This weekend has proved highly successful in introducing members (and members of other clubs) to new techniques and new philosophies.
Biggest Morning Tea (normally held in June to avoid conflict with MmoM in May). This event has run since 2002 to raise funds for cancer care. The first BMT raised $46 and that amount has increased to a maximum of over $3000 in 2022.
Other Charitable Events: NT members have provided turnings to be used or sold to raise funds for the One and All Sail Training Vessel, The Friends of the Botanic Gardens, and Beaumont House. Recently items were turned for the church from some 100-year old oak beams being replaced at St Andrew’s Church, Walkerville.
